During the past 70 years, a number of infectious diseases have been targeted in India for eradication, with mixed results. Coronavirus is just the recent one. The WHO recently said that India has “tremendous capacity” to win the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic given the country’s experience in fighting two major epidemics in the past — smallpox and polio. Given the country’s experience in fighting 2 epidemics and containing several others, it has an important role to play in dealing with the pandemic.
