Inter-state river water disputes are one of the many challenges to the Indian federalism. Water disputes in India are resolved through the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956. According to the Act, the Central Government on the request of a state government can form a Water Disputes Tribunal if it is of the opinion that the dispute cannot be resolved by negotiations. Various inter-state water dispute tribunals have been created but these have their own problems.
