Relevance:

The South Asian region covers only about 3.5% of the land surface area but hosts one fourth of the population. The only regional organization that includes all the nations of this region is SAARC. Though the region enjoys socio-cultural proximity it is also one of the least integrated regions. This is the reason why SAARC has never been able to function like other organizations around the world. While BIMSTEC has taken over SAARC, but two countries from BIMSTEC come under the ASEAN, and because of this reason SAARC has again become relevant in the backdrop of the pandemic. The PM of India recently conducted a video conference with all the leaders of SAARC countries and proposed the creation of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) Emergency Fund for SAARC.
