Relevance:
Communalism as a notion emerged in India post-advent of British in India. Subsequent decades saw the notion deepening its roots in the Indian society which ultimately led to massacres during the partition. Post-independence, it was thought that democracy and self-governance would help in eradicating this particular social evil. However, it has been the most effective tool in the hands of politicians to win elections and rally the masses behind them.
