In 2019 the NCRB published the Prison Statistics India 2016, which highlights the plight of Indian prisoners. The purpose of prison is correction in human behaviour by influencing and modifying perceptions and attitudes. However, Indian prisons have become hotbed for crime and atrocities. The undertrial population in India remians the highest in the world. Further there remians a gap between those eligible for release and actually released. This has led to overcrowding of prisons. India is a champion in human rights causes, however, it has failed its prison system.
