Mental Healthcare Act, 2017



The Mental Healthcare Act is a watershed legislation which empowers the individual who suffer from mental health problems and lays down responsibility for the state regarding treatment of mental patients. According to Lancet there are huge gaps in mental healthcare treatment in India which allocates only 1%of the total health budget to mental healthcare. Situations can change if this bill is implemented. It gives free access to mental healthcare to patients and puts the onus on the state to arrange for that. Another main provisions of this act is that it decimalises suicide and puts the onus of the state to provide care for such individuals and rehabilitate them. This is a game changing legislation in the field of mental healthcare but the objective behind this bill can be achieved if the provisions are implemented thoroughly. Recently Haryana became the first state to invoke the provisions of Mental Healthcare Act.
