Western India was recently attacked by swarms of locusts which have travelled all the way from Africa. The locust attack has affected about 90,000 hectares across 20 districts in Rajasthan. Favourable rain-bearing winds have aided their transport towards India. There is reportedly, a climate link to the infestation. Strong Indian Ocean Dipole of 2019 resulted in more than normal rainfall in India and extended into Africa. This resulted in the dry sands becoming moisture laden and facilitating the formation of swarms.
