
We saw the gutwrenching and harrowing images of mass exodus of workers of informal sector after nationwide lockdown was imposed in the month of March in order to tackle the spread of noble coronavirus. Not to be forgotten, the migrant labourers are the invisible drivers of the informal economy of urban India. Since India got her Independence, this mass exodus of “migrant workers” is one of the grimmest human tragedies ever witnessed. This problem is going to become more complicated when workers will start returning back as the demographic composition of the informal labour market will get changed. This editorial explains the reverse migration and related problems.
