This editorial on the status of Sri Lankan democracy that has suffered a serious setback after the Speaker of the Parliament signed the 20th Amendment to the Constitution. A total of thirty-nine petitions in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court were filed by the leaders of the opposition party and by members of civil society groups to challenge the legality of the amendment. This controversial amendment gives absolute executive powers and immunity from wrong doings to the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. It is important that in a democracy, the Judiciary, Legislature and the executive able to function independently.
