Agriculture is the prime driver of Indian economy towards alleviating poverty, sustainable growth and development. It satisfies the agricultural needs of 1.3 billion Indians beside providing employment and income for millions of small farmers. This editorial explains the ways to mitigate farm distress through locally-managed Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). Shareholder farmers owns and governs the FPOs where as professional managers does the administration work. FPOs adopt the efficient business practices of companies and all the good principles of cooperatives and seek to address the inadequacies of the cooperative structure.
