There are about 200 state laws and 50 central laws related to workforce in India. However, none of the central and state laws define ‘labour laws’. Recently, The Labour Code on Industrial Relations bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha to streamline industrial relations and improve India’s EODB ranking. The pandemic has shown the weak nature of labour laws in India. At the same time, many states have been tinkering with their laws to exploit this marginalised section to kick-start their economy.
