Relevance:

Recently, a South African vessel set-off for an Indian scientific expedition to the Antartic. This would be the 11th Indian expedition to the Southern Ocean. The mission extracted the largest sediment cores from the Southern Ocean measuring 3.4 metres. From the sediment core the changes that have occurred in the climate and the ocean over the years can be observed. It is estimated that the sediments may date back to at least 30,000 years.
