
India will be back for a two-year term from January 1, 2021, at a critical time in the history of the UN. As it is hoped the pandemic will subside by then, a U.S president will have been elected, and a new world order may have emerged. As a consequence of long debate on the expansion of the UNSC, many countries have started claiming their seat to the council, who had earlier never been able to do so. The article has highlighted the norms and process of voting for the UNSC non-permanent seat, and the need for increasing the UNSC and granting India a permanent seat. It has also talked about amending the charter and doing away of the ‘veto’ of the permanent members.
