It is a fact which we have acknowledged that Indian cities run on the back of workers, but, what we couldn’t acknowledge is that even private households also run on such women workers. Domestic work is one of the largest employers of India’s large informal sector, especially in urban areas. There has not been enough focus given to this sector which mostly comprises of women. The COVID-19 lockdown induced economic package also misses out on the misery faced by them. This article talks in detail about the loss of livelihood which these domestic help workers are facing and their low income is also coupled with the high risk of getting the virus. In this backdrop, the article has highlighted the need for health insurance as the need of the hour for these domestic help workers.
