The Hathras gang rape case of Uttar Pradesh marks a new phase in the history of rape-as-caste-atrocity in the 21st century. It took some time for the new republic to realize that nothing much has changed by granting passive legal rights to people who are actively treated as unequal. The Hathras case reminds us of the past event where a Dalit (Balmiki) young woman was allegedly raped and left to die by dominant caste (Thakur) men, and the familiar initial attempts at cover-up and denial.
