
Several debates are underway with the Centre passing three Farms Acts – the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020. As Agriculture is a subject to Under State list in the Constitution, several states have questioned the authority of the Central Government to legislate on what are rightfully the affairs of States and the constitutional validity of the Farm Acts. The editorial highlights debatable issues in respect of the three Farms Act and also analyses its constitutional validity.
