Delhi-Dhaka ties have a long way to go

December 2021 marked the golden jubilee of Bangladesh-India relations, which began with India’s recognition of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation-state on 6 December 1971 – just 10 days before the Liberation War ended.From the heyday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the current regime, the cosy relationship has traversed a long way with many ups and downs. Although India’s President Ram Nath Kovind has said that Bangladesh has a “special place” in India’s “neighbourhood first” policy, critics doubt, citing disputable and unresolved issues, whether India is still a dependable friend for Bangladesh.
