Relevance:
The Indian government has recently announced negative list for imported weapons, separate budget for Indian-made defence equipment, corporatisation of Ordnance Factory Board and increased FDI limit in defence manufacturing to 74%. However, it seems apart form increase in FDI the other measures are not going to boost defence manufacturing in India. India is one of the largest arms importer in the world and the import bill costs a huge chunck of the GDP. Defence manufacturing in India needs to be developed in order to reduce imports and develop ‘Make in India’.
