Contempt of court is used by judicial institutions to protect its authority from motivated attacks and unnecessary criticism. It is a legal mechanism to punish those who lower the authority of judiciary. The draconian law has its existence since colonial times. Article 129 and Article 215 of the Constitution provides the power to punish for contempt on Supreme Court and High Courts respectively. Further, Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 gives it a statutory backing.
