The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has established the Transgender Persons National Council, a requirement under the 2019 Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act. The council also includes five nominated members from the transgender community — Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, Gopi Shankar Madurai, Meera Parida, Zainab Javid Patel and Kak Chingtabam Shyamcand Sharma. Terming the establishment of the historic council, Laxmi said on Sunday that the council will collaborate with States to ensure that transgender welfare boards are formed in all states and that basic community needs are addressed, such as shelter, food, health care and education.
