Can India achieve its 2022 clean energy targets?

India in the 21st COP pledged to install 175GW of clean energy by March 2022. Of the 175 GW, 100GW was to be in solar energy, 60GW in wind projects and rest in small hydel and biomass plants. However, questions about India’s ability to reach the milestones have been raised when a spate of issues related to tariff caps, land acquisition and an import duty on solar cells and modules slowed the pace of solar capacity addition. It seems almost certain India will fall short of its target, as delays in payments by utilities, liquidity crunch caused by problems in the shadow banking sector have plunged the clean energy sector into worst crisis.
