There are already 66 LMEs defined worldwide, with the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem (BOBLME) being one of the largest. Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand all share borders. It has a 6.2 million km2 surface area, a mainly narrow continental shelf around its perimeter, and depths ranging from 2000 to over 4000 m in its central region.
